Prince Harry and Sir Richard Branson present the London Marathon's winners' their medals

21 APRIL 2013 Prince Harry was on hand to award the London Marathon's winners on Sunday. Dressed casually in a white shirt, navy trousers and a blazer, Harry, 29, arrived in London to greet the event's spectators and organisers before presenting the winners with their medals.

"He's old and she's pregnant," joked Harry when questioned about why his brother, Prince William, and sister-in-law, Kate, were not running the marathon as he had lightheartedly suggested they would at last year's race.

"What's fantastic is that my brother and his wife will be doing it next year, I think," the fun-loving Prince joked during the BBC's marathon coverage in 2012. "He's going to have to now, isn't he?" he added.

Harry
, who is patron of the London Marathon Charitable Trust, was waiting at the finish line, ready to congratulate those who completed the race before proudly handing out their awards with Sir Richard Branson.

The Prince
's appearance at the high-profile occasion was significant in light of the tragic events that occurred at the Boston Marathon earlier in the week. Bombs set off as triumphant competitors were crossing the finish line in the US city had raised security concerns at the London event, but the royal showed no sign of backing out of his duty.

Vowing to honour his long-standing commitment at the race, Harry led lead the country's show of solidarity in defiance of the blasts that took three lives and injured more than 170.

"As far as we are concerned," said a St James's Palace spokesman. "There's nothing to suggest any change," they added, confirming that Harry would still attend the long distance run.

As the race began runners and supporters alike observed a 30-second silence and participants. People were also encouraged to wear a black ribbon given to them when they picked up their race number as a show of unity with the victims of Monday's attack, which Harry wore on the left lapel of his jacket.

The Queen celebrates her 87th birthday

22 FEBRUARY 2012

Little could the Princess born on April 21, 1926, have imagined that she would go on to become Queen Elizabeth II – much loved for her wisdom, steadfastness and enduring sense of duty.

Britain's sovereign is regarded by many as a national treasure – but history could so easily have been different.

When Princess Elizabeth was born to the Duke and Duchess of York, she was third in line to the throne.

Her father was the younger brother of David, the Prince of Wales, and it was assumed that the heir to the throne would eventually have children himself, and "Lilibet", as she was known, would not accede.

All that changed in 1936, when Uncle David, now Edward VIII, abdicated in order to wed the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson.

It was an anxious time for Elizabeth's parents, and the young Princess was given the news by a footman that her father was to be crowned King.

"Does that mean that you will have to be the next Queen?" she was asked by her sister, Margaret.

Upon hearing that, yes, this would be the case, Margaret’s reaction was clear: "Poor you," she whispered quietly.

But despite the weight of her destiny, Elizabeth's childhood was a happy one. The Princess was extremely close to her immediate family – or "us four" as her father, later George VI, dubbed them.

As a youngster she delighted in games such as charades, and was a keen swimmer, winning the Children's Challenge Shield at London's Bath Club.

Although content and active, Eizabeth grew up during the privations imposed by World War II, and as a result her upbringing was relatively frugal.

With the entire nation saving and experiencing rationing, the young princess also decided to do her bit.

She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Services and trained as a driver, prompting her mother to complain: "We had sparking plugs last night all the way through dinner!".

These challenging years were crucial in moulding the monarch who is known for her stoic nature and thriftiness.

In honour of Her Majesty the Queen's birthday the band of Irish Guards included a rendition of Happy Birthday in their musical programme.

From the Quadrangle the crowds headed to St George's Chapel for the National Scout Service and then moved on to the Royal Mews.

The day celebrates those who have given an outstanding contribution to Scouting as well as those who have achieved the Queen's Scout Award. The award is gained through a variety of tasks including a year's community service, a challenging four day expedition and a residential project.

The National Review of the Queen's Scouts, an event that dates back just less than 80 years, is annually held at Windsor Castle and as a Scout Association volunteer Kate was the event's royal guest of honour.

Elsewhere, Kate's brother-in-law, Prince Harry, was busy at the London Marathon where he presented the winners with their medals.

New poll of names for William and Kate's baby

21 APRIL 2013 With Kate Middleton's due date fast approaching, speculation surrounding the sex and potential baby names for her and Prince William's baby is rife. A poll of the British public reveals that Alexandra and Grace are the current preferences for a girl, while James is the top choice for a baby boy.

The survey of 1,952 people, conducted by YouGov, did not show an overwhelming favourite but did contradict the British bookmakers' favourites.

While betting markets have George as their favourite name for a baby boy, the research done by YouGov shows that James is the top name for nearly one fifth of the British population.

Other popular girls names were Victoria, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Diana and Sophia. Louis, Richard, William and Spencer were also favourites.

The name Diana, which topped the bookmakers' lists for a while, proved to be a popular choice with voters over 60 years of age but was not the top pick for younger generations.

The public's preference for the name Alexandra matches the bookmakers' favourites.

Last week, Ladbrokes betting agency saw a flurry of bets on the name Alexandra and as a result the odds dropped from 10/1 to 2/1 in the 24 hours.

A spokesperson for the betting firm said the surge came "from nowhere" and suspected a royal leak.

The bookies' odds are currently favouring William and Kate welcoming a baby girl too.

While Kate, 31, was on a visit to Grimsby in March she was thought to have revealed her baby's sex. A member of the gathered crowd claimed that as the mum-to-be accepted a teddy bear from a well wisher, she said "Thank you, I'll take that for my d..."

After the alleged slip up, gamblers raced to place their bets on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge having a baby daughter.

Despite footage that later emerged showing that the pregnant duchess did not let slip the gender of her unborn child, the odds on a baby girl stand at 1/3 compared to 5/2 for a son.

During her visit to the Irish Guards Parade on St Patricks Day, Kate told one of the guards at the Aldershot barracks that she was hoping for a baby boy .

The Duchess told of her and William's excitement and said that while she is hoping for a son, William is keen to have a daughter.

When the pair visited a homeless shelter in Glasgow last week, the expectant brunette said "We have a shortlist for both (boy and girl), but it's very difficult. My friends keep texting me names!".

Kate Middleton

Alexandra is not a particularly common name within the royal family but one of the Queen's cousins and the youngest granddaughter of King George V is named Princess Alexandra.

Whatever William and Kate chose, it is likely to set a big baby trend. Already the royal family have proved inspirational when it comes to names, especially for boys.

Both Prince William and Prince Harry are projected to be amongst the most popular baby names for 2013, and Henry - Harry's real moniker - is currently attracting more attention than it has done previously.

Surprisingly, there seems to be less momentum for the girls when it comes to following royal tradition. Despite the royals' year in the spotlight in 2012, the name Catherine has not noticeably increased in popularity, while Elizabeth is expected to stay in the top 100 this year, but will probably remain outside the top 50.
